Join WVW for a visit to stunning hay meadows, veteran birch woodland and upland fen and bog, at Box Bush Farm, Capel y ffin, in the Vale of Ewyas (the Llanthony Valley) Monmouthshire.
This is a 38 acre former hill farm, mostly unimproved grassland, species-rich and now managed for conservation through a mixed rewilding and traditional conservation approach.
Box Bush Meadow, and 8 acre field designated an SSSI, borders the stream, the Nant Bwch – a tributary of the Afon Honddu. Species recorded on the site include rare Wood Cranesbill as well as Betony, Bitter-vetch, Rough Hawkbit, Knapweed and Devil’s-bit Scabious, with Common Spotted-orchids, Tormentil, Bird’s-foot Trefoil and Pignut in the more open areas.
During our visit we will have the opportunity to visit the meadow, climb up through the veteran birch woodland, where pheromone traps will have been set to attempt to attract rare Welsh Clearwing moths. From there we will climb up to the top of the hill to visit the carnivorous plants of the upland fen and bog.
