The Welsh Rewilding Alliance & Wye Valley Wilding
We are proud to be members of the Welsh Rewilding Alliance.
The Welsh Rewilding Alliance is a growing movement uniting organisations, landowners, communities and decision-makers to restore thriving ecosystems, boost rural livelihoods and celebrate Welsh landscapes and our wild nature.
Vision: A wilder Wales where people’s deep connection with the land enables nature to thrive and communities prosper within a new rural economy. Decisions about land are shared, and future generations gain better access to wild landscapes.
Mission: To coordinate action that builds public support and activity that drives a major political commitment to enable rewilding at a scale new to Wales. This will ensure nature thrives, communities flourish, landowners benefit and we all have better access to wild landscapes.
Goal: Our goal is to create flourishing, nature-rich landscapes across Wales that support self-sustaining rural economies, drive regeneration and secure a hopeful future for local communities, while strengthening Welsh culture and language and widening access to our shared wild heritage.
Our approach:
We seek to act as a movement that gives people a stronger voice in the future of nature, and in their right to access and enjoy it. Rewilding is central to this. We want people across Wales to feel they have a real stake in the decisions made about land and sea, decisions that affect their lives, livelihoods, and local places.
By working with communities, landowners, interest groups and government, we aim to build a shared vision for our landscapes and seascapes that is confident and open about the need for vibrant and flourishing nature in our collective future.
The Welsh Rewilding Alliance aims are:
● Flourishing ecosystems, where nature is given the space to recover and natural processes can thrive.
● Active public and community involvement, so people are part of shaping the future of land in Wales through rewilding.
● Strong, diverse rural economies, rooted in nature and creating meaningful, long-term opportunities for local communities.
● Supportive policies, laws, and funding that make rewilding possible and effective.
● A Wales rich in culture and language, where rewilding contributes to vibrant communities and a thriving Welsh language.
● Fairer access to land, recognising the need for land reform in Wales and the opportunities rewilding can offer communities within this.
Our strategy:
1. Form an alliance to increase visibility and co-ordination of messaging from rewilding organisations and practitioners
2. Build power through supporters, social media, media and activism
3. Create a clear narrative for change and a new vision for Wales’ land and future
And we seek to achieve these through our core, guiding principles:
For nature, for people: Nature recovery must benefit Wales, its communities, and its future.
For Wales, within Wales: We advocate for Wales, within Wales, for people and nature.
Nature is for everyone: We support improving access to land and water and democratising how they are managed and protected.
Nature’s value is intrinsic: There is a moral right to protect and - where necessary - reintroduce native species, while managing their impacts on people.
We look forward: The past is a guide, but many futures are possible; we are not seeking to return to any one point.
